Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)

When intraocular pressure is too high, there is a risk of glaucoma.

Therefore, it is necessary to lower the intraocular pressure in some cases.

To determine if you are a candidate for this treatment, the ophthalmologist must first conduct an examination to see if your drainage channels are clearly visible.

You should arrive at the Eye Clinic in Winksele half an hour before the treatment.

A drop will be administered to constrict your pupils, which may cause blurry vision and headaches.

Therefore, it is advisable to come with a driver.

During the treatment, your eyes will be numbed with a second drop.

A contact lens will then be placed to allow the ophthalmologist to clearly see the drainage channel.

The treatment lasts about 10 minutes and is virtually painless.

After the laser treatment, you should use the following drops:

• Dicloabak 4 times a day for 5 days.
• Sometimes: Dexamethasone MF 3 times a day for 5 days (as indicated by the ophthalmologist).

If you were already using eye pressure-lowering drops, you should continue using them until the follow-up appointment in 6 weeks!

Your vision will be less sharp for the first 3 to 5 hours after the laser treatment. Therefore, it is best to arrange for a driver.

The success rate of the treatment is 80%. The effect of the laser treatment will be evaluated after 6 weeks.

With any laser treatment in the eye, there is a risk of an inflammatory reaction. For this reason, anti-inflammatory drops are prescribed.

In the first hour after the treatment, there is a risk of increased intraocular pressure. To prevent this, an additional drop will be administered before the treatment. If you experience severe headaches within an hour after the treatment, you should contact us immediately.

The majority of the treatment cost is covered by health insurance. For SLT on one eye, you will pay approximately €55 out of pocket.

For SLT on both eyes, you will pay approximately €92 out of pocket.
