Botulinum Toxin (Botox®) Injections Around the Eyes

Botulinum toxin is a protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In the medical and cosmetic world, it is used to temporarily reduce or block muscle activity. This makes it an effective treatment for dynamic wrinkles and fine lines that result from muscle contractions. Static and very deep wrinkles will respond much less to this type of injection.

Aesthetic Indications:

In our practice, we offer Botulinum Toxin injections for various areas around the eyes, including:

• Frown Lines (also known as "worry lines" or "11-lines"):some text
  • These vertical lines are located between the eyebrows and can give a stern or tired appearance and sometimes cause headaches.
  • By injecting Botulinum Toxin into the muscles in this area, the muscles relax, and the wrinkles become smoother.

• Forehead Lines:‍
  • These are horizontal lines that appear when raising the eyebrows.
  • Injections into the forehead muscles reduce these lines and smooth the skin.

• Crow's Feet:‍
  • These are fine lines at the sides of the eyes that become visible when laughing or squinting.
  • Botulinum Toxin injections in this region help relax the muscles, making the lines less prominent.

Functional Indications: For tics or spasms of the eyelids or the muscles around the eyes.

Preparation:

• Before the treatment, a consultation will take place in which we review your medical history and discuss your expectations.
• Together, we determine which areas should be treated and the expected effect, and take photos for documentation.

The Injection Procedure:

• The treatment itself usually takes only 10-15 minutes.
• We use a fine needle to inject small amounts of Botulinum Toxin into the target muscles.
• The procedure is generally well-tolerated, and anesthesia is usually not necessary. You may experience a slight stinging or burning sensation.

Immediately After the Injections:

• It is normal to see slight redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites, but these usually disappear within a few days.
• Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas and avoid intensive physical exercise, sauna, showering, and skin products for the first 24 hours.

Results:

• You will begin to see the effects of the injections after about 3 to 5 days, with the full result visible after 1 to 2 weeks.
• The results usually last 3 to 6 months, after which a repeat treatment may be necessary to maintain the effect.
• After an initial treatment, the effects can be reviewed and discussed per patient to find the right dosage and frequency for each patient.

Botulinum Toxin is a safe and approved treatment when performed by a qualified and experienced professional. Possible side effects include:

• Slight bruising or swelling at the injection site
• Headache or a heavy feeling in the treated area
• After Botox injections around the eyes, complaints of dry eyes may increase because the muscles that promote eye closure are reduced in muscle tension
• Rare complications can cause muscle weakness in nearby areas (e.g., if close to or by unwanted spread of the product to the lifting muscle of the eyelid, a transient drooping eyelid)
