Retinal Vein thrombosis is an obstruction (occlusion) of a draining blood vessel of the retina.
This prevents blood from being drained properly and causes swelling of the retina. It can occur in a part of the retina (branch vein occlusion) or the entire retina (central vein occlusion).
Sometimes, a part of the retina may receive insufficient blood supply due to the swelling. This leads to oxygen deprivation and can result in the growth of new, fragile blood vessels on the retina. These vessels can cause bleeding in the eye and increase intraocular pressure. In severe cases, it can lead to blindness and eye pain.
