Diabetic Retinopathy

What is diabetic retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy refers to retinal problems caused by diabetes. High blood sugar levels damage the walls of small blood vessels, leading to leakage and the formation of abnormal vessels in the eye. Two main problems can eventually cause blindness:

  • Macular Edema: Leakage of fluid into the central part of the retina (macula) causing vision reduction.
  • Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy: Obstruction of blood vessels leads to oxygen deprivation in the retina, which can cause new blood vessels to grow, potentially leading to bleeding in the eye or retinal detachment.
